After years of devastating war, Gaza’s health sector is facing one of the most severe crises in its history. Hospitals and health facilities have been heavily damaged, medical infrastructure has been severely strained, and healthcare workers continue to operate under extraordinary pressure while responding to overwhelming humanitarian needs.

According to recent humanitarian assessments, a significant proportion of Gaza’s hospitals and primary healthcare facilities have been damaged or rendered partially or fully non functional. At the same time, the healthcare system has been required to respond to an unprecedented number of casualties, while also addressing the everyday health needs of a population of more than two million people. Shortages of medical supplies, electricity disruptions, and limited access to specialised care have placed further strain on healthcare providers.

Yet the most critical asset of any health system is not its infrastructure but its people. Doctors, nurses, and medical specialists are the backbone of healthcare delivery. In contexts of crisis and recovery, maintaining and strengthening the training pipeline for medical professionals becomes an urgent strategic priority.

The Palestinian Board programme plays a central role in this effort. As the national framework for postgraduate medical training, it ensures that Palestinian doctors receive advanced clinical education and specialisation across a wide range of medical fields. The programme contributes directly to strengthening the capacity of the Palestinian health system by preparing the next generation of specialists who will lead hospitals, clinics, and medical institutions in the years ahead.

Despite the enormous challenges created by the war, Palestinian medical trainees have continued their education with remarkable determination. Many have pursued their clinical training while navigating disrupted health facilities, limited resources, and the broader humanitarian crisis affecting their communities. Their perseverance reflects a profound commitment to serving their patients and supporting the resilience of the health sector.

In recognition of this effort, a special ceremony was held to honour the supervising doctors of the Palestinian Board programme. The event celebrated the dedication of more than 85 supervising physicians, representing some of the most experienced and respected medical professionals across multiple specialties.

These supervisors play a critical role in sustaining the quality and continuity of medical education. Through mentorship, clinical supervision and academic leadership, they ensure that trainees receive the rigorous training required to become skilled specialists. Their contribution is particularly important during periods of crisis, when maintaining professional standards and knowledge transfer becomes even more essential.

The ceremony also followed the graduation of a new cohort of Palestinian Board students who successfully completed their training despite the extremely difficult circumstances created by the war. Their graduation represents an important milestone for the Palestinian health sector and highlights the resilience of medical education systems even in times of conflict.

The event was organised in partnership with the Palestinian Ministry of Health and was held under the supervision and attendance of Dr Maher Shamia, Deputy Minister of Health, alongside members of the Ministry’s council and several directors general. Their presence underscored the national importance of strengthening medical education and recognising those who contribute to training future generations of doctors.

For GlocalShift Foundation, supporting medical education and healthcare capacity is a strategic priority within its broader commitment to Gaza’s long term recovery. The organisation recognises that rebuilding the health sector requires more than restoring physical infrastructure. It requires sustained investment in human capital, professional training, and educational pathways that enable medical professionals to continue developing their expertise.

Through the Return to Rebuild Scholarship Programme, GlocalShift works to support Palestinian students and professionals who continue their education despite the devastating impact of war. The programme prioritises fields that are essential for Gaza’s recovery, including medicine and other scientific disciplines that directly contribute to rebuilding public services and institutions.

Investing in medical education is therefore not only an educational initiative but a strategic intervention that strengthens the long term resilience of the health system. Every doctor trained today represents future capacity for hospitals, clinics, and specialised care services that communities will depend on for decades to come.

Honouring the supervising doctors of the Palestinian Board programme reflects a broader recognition of the individuals who sustain this system under extraordinary circumstances. Their dedication ensures that knowledge continues to be transferred, that professional standards remain strong, and that new generations of doctors are prepared to respond to the needs of their communities.

Through partnerships with national institutions and initiatives such as the Return to Rebuild Scholarship Programme, GlocalShift remains committed to supporting the resilience of Gaza’s health sector and investing in the medical professionals who will play a central role in its recovery.
