Michael A. Köhler

Michael A. Köhler is a senior expert in MENA affairs and international development with nearly 40 years of experience. He has held key roles at the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation, Germany’s BMZ, and the European Commission, including Director for the Southern Neighbourhood and Deputy Director-General for Humanitarian Aid (2019–2024). He currently serves as Ambassador and co-lead of the Grand Bargain initiative in Geneva, aimed at reforming the humanitarian aid system. Dr. Köhler holds a PhD in History and Middle Eastern Studies and lectures at the College of Europe, Sorbonne, and LUISS. He is also active in various leading European think tanks.
